Labor day is this weekend and it not only means the beginning of fall, but also a three-day weekend perfect for a short staycation.  These local favorites won’t break the bank but will get you out of the Queen City for the weekend, especially if you’re looking to avoid DNC traffic.

Wilmington, NC

Estimated drive: 3.5 hours

When people in North Carolina go to the beach, it is likely they are headed to the Wilmington area. Perfect as a vacation for Charlotteans, it offers relaxation, tourism and fun all rolled into one, and it is not too far away. Head out solo or take the whole family, trips to Wilmington always promise memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Stay on Wrightsville Beach, dine at Henry’s and visit the Children’s Museum.  This getaway guide gives you every hot spot in Wilmington.  See more at CBSCharlotte.com.

Charleston, SC

Estimated drive: 3.5 hours

Take a horse-drawn carriage down the street between the bay and a row of narrow, brightly painted houses set among a 350 years of the nation’s history right here in South Carolina. Charleston’s antiquated architecture, rich historical offerings and even its people promise a trip you won’t soon forget. From shotgun houses to Rainbow Row, even the simplest neighborhood boasts a bit of a draw here. A city so rich with the history of military battles, pirates, dignataries and socialites is worthy of the scores of books that have been written about it, and more than worthy of a weekend getaway. Eat, drink, stay and play this weekend in Charleston.

Asheville, NC

Estimated drive: 2 hours

Everyone who lives in North Carolina knows, when you want to get away from it all, the mountains are the place to go. At the doorway to the Smokeys in the glory of the Blue Ridge mountains lies the city of Asheville. Just north of Asheville — far enough away to be out of the hustle and bustle, but close enough to be easily accessible — is the beautiful and historic Grove Park Inn, the perfect place for a weekend getaway.

Blowing Rock, NC

Estimated drive: 2 hours

For many families these days, money is tight, and everyone is looking for ways to cut costs. One of the first things to go is usually travel, especially with gas being so expensive. Living in Charlotte means you don’t need to give up those trips at all. In one tank, adventures abound this summer. Blowing Rock is one of North Carolina’s oldest travel attractions, offering abundant hiking and scenery gawking opportunities near the famous outcropping itself. Strike out on a trip to Blowing Rock — just a tank of gas away — and you’ll never resent those jet-setting vacationers again.

Find the best trails, creeks and fishing spots for the outdoorsy types.
