This year’s competition will be fierce. With newcomers and well-established artists spread throughout the categories, it’s going to be an interesting ride. Be sure to catch the awards on September 6 at 8 p.m. But for now, we’ll tell you what you’ve got to look forward to!

Rihanna will have two shots to take the Video of the Year award with “We Found Love” and  “Take Care,” her duet with Drake.  Rihanna and Drake lead the nominations with five each in various categories.

Katy Perry, who took the big title away last year with “Firework,” will also have a chance at the same category this year with “Wide Awake.”

Gotye will make their debut on the awards too, with “Somebody I Used To Know” contending with Video of the Year nominees.

An M.I.A. piece, “Bad Girls,” will wrap up the nominations for Video of the Year.

Aside from the headlining category, there are several other notable mentions from your favorite artists on the list.

One Direction are a hot item on the list, with “What Makes You Beautiful” nominated under the Best New Artist and Best Pop Video.

The Biebs has two nominations, with “Boyfriend” in the running for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video.

Kanye also has multiple nominations, with two stabs at the Best Hip-Hop Video award. One is for his own song “Mercy,” and the other is for his involvement with the Thrown for “Paris.”
