Kanye West and Pusha T unveiled their “New God Flow” at the BET Awards and fans are still swept up in the sermon. Jamie Foxx, one of West’s high profile collaborators recently explained why the MC/producer deserves all the hype.

“Everybody was talking about Kanye’s performance and how he killed it,” Jamie Foxx told CBS Local. “He’s a hip-hop genius.”

Along with praise from celebrities like Foxx, West has garnered a great deal of controversy as well. In April, he received a rebuke from PETA when he dropped “Way Too Cold” (originally “Theraflu”) in which he talked about his relationship with Kim Kardashian and taunted the animal rights group with talk of his long flowing fur.

Beyond the controversy, Foxx said Kanye is at the top of his craft.

“Out of all the colorful things that surround Kanye West, all of those things make him who he is,” Foxx said. “But when it comes to just the music and when he puts his rhymes down, it’s monumental. You see a lot of guys who separate themselves by their pure talent. That’s Kanye.”

For Foxx, who is set to star in the Quentin Tarantino slavery western Django Unchained, West’s impressive talent and drive were apparent way before the platinum albums. He recalls first meeting him in the early 2000’s at the actor’s home.

“The first time he came to my house, Kanye was just known as a producer,” Foxx explained. “He rhymed in my house with no music, no nothing. Matter of fact, I was throwing a party for Puffy [Combs]. There was a young Jay-Z there and a young Neptunes. And this young guy name Kanye gave it his all. I don’t think he can stop. He’s so controversial…but when it comes down to getting in that booth there’s not too many people that can touch him.”

Kanye West will not be stopping anytime soon. In addition to the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music compilation Cruel Summer, the rapper is working on a new solo album.

“This is Kanye. You know what to expect from the family,” fellow Chi-Town producer No I.D. told MTV. “He hasn’t missed yet, so don’t expect him to miss. It’s what you expect and everything you don’t expect.”
