On May 11, Katy Perry showed up at the NARM Music-biz awards looking quite different from how she usually does. She rocked a dark, more serious look, reflecting a side of her music that we haven’t seen before , she says. Whatever it is, it seems to be working for her, because she took home Best Artist of the Year at the show.
Katy has been a fashion icon since she popped onto the music scene. This new look came as a surprise to many, considering we are used to seeing her in candy-cane dresses and whipped cream bikini tops.
Here are some tips on how you too can rock a goth-inspired look without looking scary!
Style Breakdown: Katy Perry
Get the Look:
Katy rocked a sheer panel-dress that fit snug, showing off her curves. The sheer bands showed the perfect amount of skin. The dress also sported a higher neckline. These details make this look sexy, as well as classy.
Scoop neck Long Sleeve Cashmere Black Dress-$89.99
The flowing sleeves give this dress an elegant feel, and are often seen in gothic-style clothing. It shows a bit of leg, making this dress sexy without it being too much. Cinch in the waistline with a studded or patent leather belt to accentuate your waistline and a tinge of punk the dress.

She paired this dress with black, studded Christian Loboutin pumps.
Green Faux Suede Studded Peeptoe Pumps Heels-$25
These immaculate shoes give your fit some edge, as well as a pop of color. And if greens not your hue, they also come in a cobalt blue.

Her jewelry looked like vintage, and was a stark contrast from the “bling” that most celebs wear.
Double Hammered Drop Necklace – UrbanOutfitters.com- $29.00
This is a simple piece that will go with almost everything in your wardrobe, and is long and vintage-inspired like the one Katy had on.
Katy also had on a beautiful cameo ring.
Portrait Cameo Ring Large- Black $46.00
True cameo rings are carved out of shells. Cheaper versions are often made of different materials, and look just as good! If you want to take your goth look to the next level, there are many cameo rings featuring skeletons. I even came across a Hello Kitty one. These rings come in many different styles, so it is easy to find one that suits you.
Her black tipped nails were spunky as well.
Little details like these are the key to wearing a goth look without going overboard. For instance, the dress she is wearing is just a black dress. Paired with less dramatic make up you wouldn’t think this dress was gothic at all, but by adding small details such like dark lips and studded heels, the look seems darker. The dress in the context of the other elements gives it a different vibe.
Her hair was a dark purple, with intentional roots showing. This gives the hair a more subtle feel, and is much more wearable than the baby blue hair Katy has worn in the past.
Manic Panic Ultra Violet Amp Hair Dye- Hot Topic $12.99
The loose curls of this look also make it less severe. If her hair was slicked back and dark black, it could be too much. But adding some color and curl to the hair sets off the mostly black look perfectly. And the loose curls add a glamorous feel to the ensemble. The middle part is reminiscent of gothic style, giving this fun do some edge. Manic Panic has great colored hair dye, and comes in lots of colors.
She wore burgundy-plum lipstick, and lots of eyeliner, in keeping with traditional gothic fashion.
Armani Beauty Rouge d’Armani Lipstick – Brown 201- $30.00
This is a good lipstick that is dark, but not too dark, perfect for evening looks.
Clinique Quickliner for Lips – in Bon Bon- $15.00
This lipliner will help your lipstick in place. If you eat while wearing it, this lipliner is not going to smear.
Also, applying a bit of concealer around your lips will help keep it smudging.
Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner In Midnight Black- $22
This eyeliner stays where you put it. This is important because you don’t want it to run. This is cream eyeliner, which you apply with a small angled brush. It allows for a lot more control than a pencil.
If you are a fan of cat-eyes and like to extend your liner past your eye, this is the easiest stuff to do it with.
COVERGIRL LashBlast 24 Hour Mascara- around $9.00
This is a great mascara, it stays on and really makes your eyelashes look thicker. It’s also inexpensive, and you can buy it at most any drugstore.
She didn’t wear bronzer, showing off her porcelain skin. A lot of bronzer or blush will confuse the look, and just make it seem like you are wearing too much makeup. Also, be careful to not make your face look too pale, this could make you look sick, and your face too powdery. She used minimal eye shadow, which kept the look from being too dark, and had very defined eyebrows, adding drama.
To do eyebrows like Katy, use an eye shadow that is one shade darker than your natural brows. Take a small eye shadow brush and just go over your eyebrows with a tiny bit of shadow. You can also put water on the brush then dip it into the eyeshadow and apply. This makes your eyebrows really stand out. It’s easy to do, and looks great for night-time.
Katy looks great, no matter what she is wearing. What makes her crazy styles so awesome is how unique they are. Many people try to look like other people they think are “cool” and copy what “cool people” wear. But you shouldn’t try to dress like others. Wear whatever the heck you want! Fashion is fun! Wear a gothic look, wear a tutu, wear a big fat bow! Wear what makes you happy. Fashion does not have to be so serious. If you wear what you want, people will respect you for being you, and soon enough be copying your style.
