Just weeks ago, Ronald Poppo was a victim of a brutal attack by a drugged out man who tore off pieces of his face in a zombie type attack with his teeth. Police on the scene has to shoot Rudy Eugene when he refused to stop eating the victim’s face and growled at officers.

Poppo has been recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center since the May 26 attack along the MacArthur Causeway that left most of his face missing. “I’m very pleased to say Mr. Poppo is doing very well today,” Ryder’s Chief of Trauma Dr. Nicholas Namias said during a news conference to CBSMiami on Tuesday. “He is eating, he is talking with us.” Surgeons did say most of his left eye was destroyed and his right eye is currently covered with a flap of his tissue in order for it to recover.

MSNBS reported that Poppo remembers the attack but is coping remarkably well and is upbeat and pleasant. He is also getting help from mental health professionals and social workers. Jackson Memorial Hospital has set up a fund to assist Poppo and anyone interested in contributing can visit http://www.jmf.org.

His attacker was allegedly on bath salts and other drugs during the attack but the autopsy results have not been released to the public and could take up to as much as a year to totally complete.
