We have inherited many useful things here in the states from our British friends across the pond.
We may have revolted from the crown centuries ago, but there is no denying that the English have provided us with many talented artists and bands.
Here are some of our favorite British Invaders who have left their mark on the American music scene.
Coldplay:
Chris Martin and company have topped the alternative rock charts for years. Their latest album, Mylo Xyloto, was a huge hit in the UK and in the states. 2009 was their most successful year, when they receive a whopping seven nominations at the Grammy Awards and won three.
Jessie J
Jessie J has topped the American Billboard charts with her recent singles ‘Price Tag’ and ‘Domino.’ The London native wrote for artists like Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus before here solo career blew up. Not only does she produce catchy hits, but man can this girl sing!
One Direction
This dreamy British/Irish boy band has captured the hearts of teenage girls all over America. They group first came onto the scene after placing third of the reality show, The X Factor. Their single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Leona Lewis
There were few songs that were as popular as Lewis’ Bleeding Love in 2008. The single reached #1 in more than 30 countries all over the world! Her smooth, sultry voice has captivated fans all over America.
Oasis
Perhaps their most memorable single, ‘Wonderwall’, seems like an American classic. The feel-good tune was off of the band’s second album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory. The band has since broken up, but their music will not be forgotten.
Radiohead
The British rock band made music history with the release of their 7th album Rainbows. The album was released as a digital download and customers could name their own price, paying only what they thought the album was worth.
Adele
What’s not to love about this woman? Her career has exploded since the release of her album 21. She took won in 12 categories at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. She has become a world-wide phenomenon and music lovers can’t wait for more new music.
The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones are simply iconic. They are perhaps the face of rock and roll in American and abroad. They became popular in the states in the 1960′s and continue to rally a huge fan base. Their most recent album, A Bigger Bang, was released in 2005.
Amy Winehouse
The late Amy Winehouse has a one-of-a-kind voice that will never be forgotten. She won an incredible five Grammy awards for her 2006 album, Back to Black. After her death, this album became the UK’s best selling album of the 21st century. Talk about a legend.
The Beatles
How could we leave them out? Their enormous popularity was somewhat of a revolution. The Beatles are one of the best selling musical acts in history. In 2008 they topped Billboard magazine’s list of the all-time most successful Hot 100 Artists.
