After last night’s finale episode of American Idol, Mix 104.1/Boston talked to finalists Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips. What you may not have realized about Idol contestants is they have no idea what’s going on in the world.

When asked about their thoughts on the fans they’ve collected while singing on the show, Sanchez said, “We try so hard to contact our fans and see what’s going on but literally, we’re in the American Idol bubble and we don’t know what goes on outside of it.”

Phillips weighed in as well, saying, “When we went home that’s probably the most we’ve seen from support.”

Sounds like it might be lonely being a finalist. But the two confirmed that throughout the competition they’ve had their fellow castmates to depend on.

“You make friends,” Phillips said. “You’re closer to some than other, but you’re all close. You can talk with one another. You really depend on some people. Colton [Dixon] and Heejun [Han] I was really close with, and Elise [Testone]. When it narrows down to less and less people it gets a little tougher. You know you’ve got your family, you’ll always have your family, but sometimes it’s tough to talk to them as well.”

And the finalists absolutely support each other, even making good natured jokes under all the pressure. Sanchez made everyone laugh when talking about her feelings about being in the top two.

“Of course we all wanted to win but it’s come to the point where nobody really makes it this far,” Sanchez said. “For a 16 year-old and someone like Phillip to make it this far…I love that I’m with him in the top two. It’s amazing. He’s an amazing person.”

“I’m an old man,” Phillips replied.

And while the contestants confirmed that, at this point in the competition, they still take advice from judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson, they only take on what they can handle.

“There’s only so much you can take,” Phillips said. “They want to help us out and we take it in. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn’t. We take the best of what we can.”

And it sounds like the pair will be glad to wrap up the grind of Idol competition after tonight’s finale.

“We’re really relieved,” Sanchez said. ‘We’re going to miss each other so much. We’re going to be on tour together, but this competition has taught us so much. It’s been really tiring too.”
