The second annual Passport for Fashion highlights Charlotte’s emerging role as a center for fashion and design. Scheduled for April 21, 2012 at Reelworks Studios in the N.C. Music Factory, the show features 125 models, 42 designers, runway shows, a competition of fashions created from recyclable materials, plus a round-the-world dining experience provided by ten of Charlotte’s top restaurants. Featured on the runway at this year’s event is the couture of Luis Carlos Machicao, a Peruvian-born designer who has presented his collections in Houston, Austin, San Francisco, Miami, and at New York’s Fashion Week.
New this year, a Doggy Couture runway show features the pet fashions of Michigan designer Sugar Chic modeled by Charlotte’s cutest dogs. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Passport for Fashion benefit Project Halo, a no-kill animal sanctuary in Charlotte that rescues homeless or unwanted pets. The unique Recyclable Fashion competition fills the runway with eco-friendly couture composed of cast-off and overlooked materials. Last year’s entries included dresses created from hair foils, shopping bags, used paint brushes, beer cans and much more. The 2011 event drew a crowd of 2,500 attendees.
The evening of fashion begins with live music by two bands as guests enjoy a flute of rose champagne and cruise Passport for Fashion’s vendor room showcasing artisan jewelry, gifts, party enhancements and local arts and crafts. Along the way, they’ll get their passports stamped at food tables featuring cuisine ranging from Southern Soul to the exotic dishes of Morocco. Participating restaurants include Chima Brazilian Steakhouse, Brio Tuscan Grille, La Paz Mexican Restaurant, Enso Asian Bistro and Sushi Bar, and Miro Spanish Grille. Eight local bars will be on hand to provide fashion enthusiasts with margaritas, martinis, sake, beer, wine, and signature cocktails.
