From the Huffington Post: “On Sunday, a Twitter user devoted to hating Cyrus posted death threats against the singer. The hateful tweets have now been deleted, but Cyrus showed there is a right way for celebrities to defend themselves against their detractors.
“U have nothing better 2 do than hate? That saddens me. Im surrounded by love Im sorry 4 whatever happened 2 make u so bitter,” Miley wrote.
Cyrus responded to the threat and got serious about the issue, calling on Twitter to take action against the hordes of bullies who use the microblogging service:
“I won’t tolerate someone telling me 2 die. I think Twitter needs to take some responsibility and make it a safe environment!”
Miley is far from the first celebrity to receive death threats on Twitter, but it’s hard to say what the company could do to make the site a safer environment.
Twitter relies on its users to monitor and report offensive or threatening tweets, and suggests that users simply block and ignore their harassers.
When it comes to threats, the site says it’ll investigate reports of violent threats, but asks that users remember that Twitter is “not the police and we cannot actively work with the police to report incidents that you report to us. If something has gone beyond the point of a personal conflict and has turned into actual violent threats that you feel are credible, call the police.”
